Dunkley nominates Swans for AFL draft

  • Dunkley nominates Swans for AFL draft

Josh Dunkley has nominated to join Sydney under the father-son rule at next week's AFL national draft.

The Gipplsand Power midfielder is the son of defender Andrew Dunkley, who played 217 games for the Swans from 1992-2002.

Under the AFL's complicated new bidding system, Sydney plan to recruit Dunkley and academy player Callum Mills, who is rated a top-10 draft selection.

Dunkley had been torn between staying near family in Victoria and nominating for the Swans.

"Josh is a determined and competitive player and has existing relationships within the club," said Swans football manager Tom Harley.

"Like the vast majority of players in the draft, Josh's desire is to stay close to family.

"But he has elected to nominate the Swans and is open to a move north, which is exciting.

"Both parties understand that the nature of the new father-son and academy bidding system means nothing is guaranteed on draft night."
